Botanical Fossil Plate from Talbragar Fish Bed - Gulgong, New South Wales
Botanical Fossil Plate, late Jurassic period, Talbragar Fish Bed fossil site west of Gulgong, New South Wales.
This fossil features botanical leaves in chert.
The shale and siltstone that make up the Talbragar Fossil site are believed to be the erosional remains of sediment washed down from a freshwater lake situated high in the Gondwanan landmass in the Jurassic period (between 141 and 205 million years ago). This lake was full of fish life and surrounded by lush bushland however the remains accumulated in what is now the Fossil site, buried in mud and siltstone at the bottom of a rock pool.
Over time, 16 species of botanical fossil, 8 species of fish fossil plus many different insects have been identified as completely unique to the area.
