Polished Australian Specimen
Peanut Wood aka Petrified Driftwood Fossil from 'Windalia Radiolarite', Kennedy Ranges, Western Australia.
This specimen is a nice large chunk and has been smoothly tumbled and features a polished face.
Peanut Wood is a variety of Petrified Wood that formed during the Cretaceous period when driftwood eaten by 'shipworm' larvae, a type of marine clam. The 'shipworm' larvae would attach themselves to the driftwood, shaving off small boreholes using their shell. These boreholes filled with sediment and over millions of years, the driftwood has petrified, creating these uniquely 'peanut' marked fossils aka organic gemstones.
